Anyone know whether or not the IMACs are going to be updated in the next few months?
I am starting to look for a new computer (switching from a PC to a MAC) and trying to get a handle on when possible updates might be released if any. I would hate to buy in the next couple months when all I had to do was wait until the end of the year.

I dunno what Kodak does with all the patent settlements they win... they won a fortune off Sun Microsystems a decade or so back, too. I wouldn't say they're dying, though, their focus has just moved to document imaging workflow systems and other such exciting things.

Just buy a Slingbox and watch any channel you want, anywhere you want.
Ditto! Slingbox rocks! And it's even more fun when you have a friend or two in other states that allow you to use their Slingbox to watch events that are blacked out in your own area. :)

Until not that long ago Fox controlled DirecTV, so that is likely why.
They have a program you can use on your computer to watch your dvr from your computer, but it has issues.. One is it does not work on a computer with dual monitors, which is just dumb.
It's not DirecTV that has a good app, it's Tivo, which powers directv boxes... don't give DirecTV any credit, they're stuck in the 90s

I am looking for the full schedule for the developer conference. Specifically, I need to know when we will be done on Friday. This will help me book my tickets back to my town. Can someone help me with this? ( If there is another thread specifically about the developer conference, please point me to that as well. )
Friday is usually the miscellaneous sessions day, when the less important (or popular I might say) sessions are held. Of course you can leave whenever you want but Friday is still a full day. I would plan on staying the entire day if you can. Leaving Saturday morning is best as you can relax on Friday :)

I've never had any issues with the latest updates, so I don't really care with 10.4.8...but I wish Safari could be less memory-hungry, or use less virtual memory...that's all.Me too. And I wish Safari had a "Sure you want to quit?" dialog box for those times when we accidentally do a Command + Q in the dark when we thought we were doing a switch application Command + Tab.
Glad to hear it's in Leopard. But having to wait for an entirely new system version to get a little helpful dialog box in one little application seems like an expensive unnecessary delay.

These days much of the craftsmanship that used to take place in the darkroom coaxing a master print from a negative now takes place digitally. A technically well exposed frame can still produce a crappy print at the end of a less skilled artist. Conversely, technical perfection (second curtain sync, hyperfocal distancing gobbledygook) has very little to do with art, or even creativity. Great "art" these days is even being shot on a cellphone.
Both camps (the technical-crats & the ones who are blissfully unaware of the minutiae) can produce "great" work.
Many beginners suffer from the same bad pshop skills (hey, look... I can make grass grow on his head, no make that two heads) and mistakes that beginning designers can (hey look, I can make EACH letter a different color, and a different font).
All that being said, if I was teaching beginning photographers I would remove almost everything to start (camera, lens, etc.) and go primitive and start with building pinhole cameras. Then I would progress to the end point which would be post-processing. Post-processing is huge though...

Not to mention, as Winni said RAW workflow programs are usually all you need unless you are doing commercial or portraiture where skin smoothing or other things are needed.
Photoshop is used far to much as a crutch than an enhancement tool.

I thought it was revolutionary - the idea that you always start with a template and never with a blank document. I thought - wow, all these years and Microsoft didn't come up with this?
But after trying to use it, it was non-intuitive and I gave up after about 10 minutes.

Just something I _think_ I remember reading, but didn't Apple change the firewire controller chip on some MacBook Pro's back around the time yours was made?
.... and the result was that some firewire devices were no longer recognized?
Suggestion:
If you can't find the solution on macrumors, also check:
macintouch.com (use search function to check old reader reports)

I also think that some folks were able to "work around" this problem by using a firewire hub, but again, I can't confirm that.
Just some thoughts....

We haven't seen what Amazon's prices are for the iPad but I bet after a few weeks when demand dies down a bit, we are going to see $20 bucks off the sales price if not a bit more.
So how is it that Apple can only give the education sector a $20 discount per device when Amazon can buy this device from Apple (who is making a profit), resell it to consumers, AND STILL MAKE A PROFIT?
I'm not sure if Apple is being entirely greedy though and these things are rarely as simple as people try to make them out to be. For one, I bet there are concern's related to their resellers. If Apple sells them with too large of a discount, their resellers will have a hard time competing displeasing their resellers. I bet there are more things to consider than I am even aware of though.
As far as I know, there aren't many electronics manufacturers that even offer education discounts, so it's difficult to hang Apple for not giving bigger discounts.

It's clear that some iPhone 4s are thicker.
Probably just terrible manufacturing, different moulds, etc. That could definitely be a contributor. But hey, I'm not a manufacturer. Just speculating! :D

Performance note: just thought someone might want to know what kinda performance I getting.
Computer: 2010 i7 15" macbook pro
Res: 1680x1050
Graphics settings ultra ( highest it goes )
perfectly playable it only starts to stutter under heavy battle scenes and you can fix that by dropping back down to high settings.
the only thing that was not set to ultra is the textures which were set correctly according to SC2 for a 512vram gpu
also its perfectly playable with everything set to high on the native res of a 24" LED ACD 1920x1200

Certainly if you are willing to wait that long then MWSF might be very likely for an update. It all depends on how soon that you want to get a new Mac.
